The Basics of Google Image and Photo Search.
- First navigate your way to the google photo search page by searching for ‘Google Photo Search’ or ‘Google Image Search’.
- Google photo search is very easy to use for basic image searches, so, for example if you wanted to see a wide selection of images of Washington Square, you would merely type in ‘Washington Square’.
- When you want to make a more advanced search, of a horse running, or a horse in a field, you can add these terms onto the basic search, i.e. ‘running horse’ or ‘horse in a field!

Finding a specific photograph, or image, can be time consuming and frustrating, but these hacks will help you super boost your searches!
- You can search for a certain type of file, excluding all other types. If you wanted to search for a .png file, then you would type ‘filetype:png’ into your search bar before writing the main search term, ‘horse’ for instance.
- Make use of the Google Advanced Image Search Tool which offers you a wide range of search options which you can find on the drop down menus on the left hand of the search bars.
- A very useful function of the Google Advanced Image Search is the ability to select the copyright status of an image (free images without any copyrights). This is essential if you are intending to use the image for commercial purposes in which case you can find a huge range of available images that you can use for free. To use this just type in your search term then on the left hand side of the search bars you’ll see a drop down menu option called ‘usage rights’. For Royalty free images see search term ‘free to use or share, even commercially’.
How to do a Reverse Photo/Image Search.
A ‘reverse image search’ allows you to find the origins of a particular photo or image. You will be able to find similar pictures as well using this tool.
- To do a reverse photo/image search you can add the free Search by Image extension to your Chrome dashboard. Once you have it set up you can simply drag and drop an image into the search bar of the extension and hit search.
- Alternatively you can go to images.google.com and the reverse image search page will come up. You can either upload an image from your computer or copy and paste the URL of a photo you want to search then sit back and let Google work its magic!
Alternatives to Google Photo Search.
Pixabay – This is a lovely site that has an extremely intuitive user interface that has nearly 2 million free and royalty free images available for any project you are working on.
Unsplash – Very similar to Pixabay with more of an emphasis on graphic art although it includes a good selection of photography.
Freeimages is another alternative for finding free to use images, including for commercial purposes. The site has a great selection of collections that contain almost everything you might need!
Google is a fantastic research tool for photographers, graphic designers and creatives.
Finding the perfect images for your project will make all the difference to the overall feel of your website while making a good first impression on your visitors. Google has a powerful range of tools that are freely available for you to use and the free alternatives, such as Pixabay or Unsplash, are a great way to support photographers with optional small donations for the use of their work.
