Passports have been issued by American consular officials since 1775. Ben Franklin was the Minister to France. His mission issued passports whose design was based on the French passport design. For several years passports were not only issued by the Department of State, but also by several States and Cities.
Passport Photo Requirements
It is important that you refer to the U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs website for the exact requirements for US passport photos.
NOTE: Different countries have different requirements when it comes to passport photos (for example the requirements for an Indian passport photo are different from that of the United States passport photo). India allows head coverings on religious grounds. United States may under special circumstances. Below is a summary of the requirements.
US Passport Photo Requirements
- The photo must be a color photo taken recently (in the last 6 months).
- Filters should not be applied to the photo.
- Selfies are not acceptable.
- You cannot wear eyeglasses for the photo (I wear eyeglasses all the time and looking at a camera without wearing one is a difficult thing for me to do).
- The background should be white or off-white.
- The passport photo should be 2 x 2 inches.
- You cannot digitally alter the photo.
- Your eyes should be open (Infants can have their eyes closed).
- You should face the camera directly.
- You should wear normal clothing (you cannot wear uniforms).
- You cannot wear headphones.
Finding a passport photo center near me.
There are many ways to find a passport photo center or a photo studio near where you are located. The most common way is to perform a Google search. But the results might not be exactly what you are looking for.
Sometimes Google might not know exactly where you are located. Perform a search on Google from your desktop. Scroll to the very bottom of the page. Google will show where it thinks you are located (In my case Google indicates that I am in the 19146 Zip Code. But I was in a different Zip Code at the time of performing the search). So, in this case a search for “passport photo center near me” will not give the proper results.
From work, when I launch Google Maps, by default it always shows New York City, although I am in Center City Philadelphia (this is probably because of how my work laptop is configured and connected).
Google and other search engines can track your location much more accurately when you are on a mobile device.
Why do I use Google Maps and not Google search?
- Google Maps search results are much more accurate (search relevancy and area).
- Google Maps shows the search results in a visual format.
- Google Maps allows you to move the search area easily (you can zoom in or out or move it in any direction).
- Google Maps also shows you a brief summary of the photo center just by hovering over it (Information like the store timings).
- Google Maps also allows you to contact the center from Maps easily.
Using Google Maps to find a passport photo center near me.
Launch Google Maps: Launch Google Maps and type in the zip code where you want to perform the search. If you do not know the zip code, enter a street address and city name. Sometimes I enter the name of the store I am standing next to, to find my exact location.
Enter Search Phrase: Once you identify and enter the location you are in, search for Passport Photo. Google Maps will show all places near you that offer that service.
Search Results: Once you enter the search term, the search results are displayed.
Brief Description: Hover over one of the search results. Google Maps will show you a brief summary of the information.
I hope this helped. What is your favorite way of searching for information online? Will you ever travel to India?
