The United States of America is a vast country with one of the most varied landscapes, places and sights to see and photography in the world. From the huge cities on the East Coast to the Rocky Mountains, from the Nevada desert to the tropical coastlines of Florida; every photographer has a bucket list of places to capture with their trusty camera. It’s a great idea to do some research about the locations before you visit so you can make the most of the time you have there, but always allow time and space to follow your instincts and see where it takes you. NOTE: The featured image is Artesa Winery in Napa Valley, Sonoma Country, California.
The Nevada Desert.
The Nevada desert, also known as Mojave Desert, is a large expanse of mountains and dry, arid landscapes in the state of Nevada. The vast landscape has an ‘other worldly’ feel with distant mountains and an extremely low population of around 2.5 million.
The desert makes a superb location for photography, where you can photograph amazing sunrises and sunsets across the huge sweeping landscape and with so little pollution the skies are crystal clear. The dramatic cloud formations, mountains and occasional trees all come together to create powerfully bleak scenery that is full of intensely lonely perspectives that burst with the enormous character of an untouched natural landscape.
I enjoy photographing Arizona and New Mexico also.
New York City.
The Big Apple, bustling with life and cultures, the central hub of American business is the home to more than 8 million permanent residents, as well as the tourists who visit from all over the world. This fantastic melting pot is one of the most interesting cities in the world and makes an ideal place to set your camera!
The city is packed with world famous sites like The Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Grand Central Station and of course the nearby Statue of Liberty, all of which make world class photo opportunities. However, as well as the more famous and recognizable spots, the city is also full of unique views, back streets and neighborhoods that may not be so well known but can really embody the character of the city more subtly!
Yellowstone National Park.
The Yellowstone National Park is the world’s oldest national park, and with tens of thousands of acres of stunning natural beauty, thriving wildlife and spectacular geysers, you will be spoilt for choice in this haven for photographers. Especially good for landscape and wildlife photographers it presents a great challenge for anyone.
Make sure you visit the Lone Star Geyser, which is one of more predictable ones, and get a shot of it in full flow when it throws water dozens of feet up into the air. The Yellowstone Lake, the Two Ocean Plateau and the lovely 100 foot Dunanda Falls all make the ideal backdrop for your photographic expression.
American Journeys on the Iconic Amtrak Trains.
I travel frequently on the Amtrak Trains all along the Northeast Corridor for work. Amtrak clearly does not have the level of service or speed that some of the trains in Europe and Japan have. But America is a beautiful country and it is large. The best ingredient for spectacular train journeys.
Road trips and train journeys make a natural choice for photo essays, photo blogs and exhibition ideas. Travelling the length of the country by Amtrak trains will take you through tiny desolate stations that, like insects in amber, have been captured in time, as well as the large cities, empty prairie lands and the dense ancient forests. Every day will be a new surprise as you travel the nation, with new views and scenery coming at you all the time.
If you want to focus on the small train station towns you can get off the train and spend a few days there really finding the photographs that express the inner feelings of these far away places. With a literal infinite set of possibilities for projects, photo opportunities and places to stop, every trip will be completely unique, giving you the chance to produce some amazing photography on your trip.
Californian Coast.
The California Coastline is varied, stunning and is home to some of the most popular beauty spots in the world. The Big Sur is one of the state’s most famous areas for photography with ancient woods and a rugged coastline. The great cities of the state, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, have great beaches, such as Manhattan Beach in LA, and with their busy life they are full of interesting characters and special sites for your photography.
So whether you’re looking for pristine natural coastlines where you can take some amazing shots, or bustling, hectic and unpredictable coastal scenery, California has it all!
Quick List of another 5 locations that nearly made it onto the Bucket List.

- Portland, Oregon, is a strange and fun, quirky and unique city with amazing landscape and an interesting cultural life.
- New Orleans and the Mississippi River, for the jazz scenes, the steam river boats and fantastic architecture from yesterday’s world.
