There’s a lot of reasons why, if you’re a photographer, you should certainly consider getting into videography as well and work both fields simultaneously. If you’ve spent time learning the skills, techniques, underlying principles and methods of photography the great news is that most of that knowledge is highly transferable to videography; which means that juggling the two will not be too difficult for you! This means that you’ll hit the ground running and be leaps and bounds ahead of someone who has just started videography without studying photography first.
If you were already thinking about transitioning to videography there’s no reason why you should abandon your photography because the two can be extremely complimentary, not only in practise but also in terms of your clients and career. Both photography and videography rely on your ability to engage the audience using visual elements in a composition and portray a captivating narrative within that.
What are the Advantages of Being a Photographer and a Videographer at the same time?
- It may be quite easy to pick up videography if you’re already a photographer because the fundamental skills that you have mastered are transferable. This means that the transition will be quite easy for you to make.
- Make the most of your DSLR. The vast majority of modern DSLR cameras have excellent video functionality which means with a little practise you can start marketing your services as a videographer as well.
- If you diversify your business by doing both photography and videography then you can certainly expect to increase your client base. Many clients are looking specifically for a videographer and if you provide those services at a competitive rate then you will get the gig!
- The trend online is moving quickly towards video content on almost all platforms and in many sectors of the economy. Everything from education to real estate sales, fashion shoots to marketing rely heavily on video footage which means there are growing opportunities for people who can fulfil the demand for both photography and videography.
- Future proof your business by having a diverse range of services to be able manage tough times and recessions. If you can provide a wider range of services including photo and video, editing and post production, then you stand a much better chance of making it through hard economic times than if you had only one specialization.
- Many potential clients and customers are looking for both still photos and videos and, for convenience sake, would prefer to hire one person to cover both bases. If you’re working in a niche like real estate then it’s becoming more and more essential to be able to provide video services as well; since that’s the way the market is moving.
- Financially speaking, it can be a very good career move to start doing videography as well as photography. The average videographer in America earns around $60,000 a year compared to around $40,000 a year for photographers. If you start working in both fields you may well be able to increase your income quite considerably.
- If you decide to work with video as well then you can work in some pretty fun sectors! You can start making music videos for bands, filming concerts and festivals. You’ll get backstage passes and be able to network in a whole new area of the professional creative scene. This could lead to exciting opportunities in the future as well!
What are the Disadvantages of Being a Photographer and a Videographer at the same time?
- When you diversify your services and spread your energies more broadly you might find that you’ve bitten off more than you chew. You’ll need to sit down and work out if you have enough time to dedicate to expanding your workload and if you are willing to sacrifice other aspects of your life to make a success of it.
- If you are doing both photography and videography then you might struggle to stand out and be seen as an authority in your field. It can be a more successful strategy in business to focus on a very specific niche within either photography or videography and work within that to grow your client base and reputation.
- The extra cost of new equipment is something that has to be taken into account if you are hoping to do both photos and videos. If you want to take the videography seriously you’ll need to buy a pro grade camera, new tripods, lights and external mics. The costs can add up pretty fast although if you’re confident that you can get the work to pay it off then it might be a risk that is well worth taking!
- Adding more services to your business can be a stressful challenge to take on. You’ll need to spend time marketing yourself in a new field and find new clients, engage with new types of projects and work in different ways. This can be quite a stressful undertaking so depending on where you are in your life then it’s something to keep in mind when making the decision.
- If you are going to use your existing DSLR camera to make videos then you should be aware that there is a limitation when recording with a DSLR because they usually have a fairly short maximum clip length of 30 minutes at the most. This means that you won’t be able to film longer footage, such as at a corporate event with several hours of speeches. There are still other opportunities that you could pursue though which only require shorter video footage such as real estate and product videography.
Doing Photography and Videography – There’s A Lot of Factors To Take Into Account.
There are also more personal things that you should consider when deciding whether to expand your repertoire of services to include videography. A major factor that will determine whether it’s the right decision for you is your personality type and your aims in your life and career. Ask yourself if you are happy where you are or do you want to take your career to the next level?
There is no doubt at all that diversifying your business can lead to fantastic new things for you and your career but no new venture is a sure thing! It’ll take extra energy, determination and hard work to grow your business and so you might have to be prepared to sacrifice some of your free time and other commitments to fit it in at first.
Once you have done the marketing, updated your website and portfolio, found new clients and opportunities and mastered the day to day techniques then you’ll find that you can settle back into more of a normal routine again though!
There is no doubt that video is a growing sector on and off line; so if you can deliver what is needed you will find success by being a photographer and a videographer at the same time!
Taking on videography will also put you in interesting new situations where you can make great new connections and friendships. The skills you learn in video will also help your photography to evolve and develop in ways you couldn’t yet predict!
Working as a Photographer and Videography is Exciting and Challenging, in Equal Measures!
There’s not doubt that you can work in both photography and videography, and if you’ve been wondering whether or not you can, the answer is a certain yes! If you plan strategically you can interlink the two disciplines extremely efficiently while still attracting new clients and gigs at the same time. There may be long hours at first and challenges to overcome, but if you stay with it, and apply a good work ethic, you can achieve great things!
