Getting your posts right is vital to break through the rest of the noise on the site which includes using the right picture sizes, ratios and selecting the right formats from portrait, landscape or square.
Quick Guide to Instagram Sizes, Ratios and Everything else you need to know.
Instagram has a variety of different sizes that are used on the platform depending on whether your post is a photo or video, a portrait or landscape. Below is a brief table of the most common options that you have at your disposal. Instagram has come a long way since it’s early days following its launch in 2012 when users could only upload images using a ratio of 1:1, however, now you have a much wider range of choices to help you showcase your photography and videos at their best.
It is also worth remembering that if you are uploading an image that is beyond or exceeds the available ratio sizes on Instagram then you will be forced to crop the picture or use the Instagram auto cropping feature in order to display it. This is sometimes fine but for some images it may really detract from the overall photo.
Instagram Posts – The Ideal Ratios and Pixel Sizes for Your Posts Photo and Video).
Post Type | Ratio | Post Size (Pixels) |
---|---|---|
Portrait (Photo) | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 |
Landscape (Photo) | 1.91:1 | 1080 x 608 |
Square (Photo) | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 |
Portrait (Video) | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 |
Landscape (Video) | 1.91:1 | 1080 x 608 |
Square (Video) | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 |
Does uploading a photo to Instagram reduce the image quality?
Unfortunately, the answer to this is yes. If you are uploading an image that has a pixel size exceeding 1080 then Instagram will automatically compress the image. This can lead to the final image post being blurred and will certainly reduce the image quality.
On the other end of the scale, if you are uploading an image that is below 320 x 320 pixels then Instagram will automatically expand the image which will lead to serious reductions in the quality of the image making it appear fuzzy and blurred.
The ideal photo size for Instagram will be a square image with 1080 x 1080 pixels or a portrait image with 1080 x 1350 pixels; both of which will be displayed on your audience’s feeds looking perfectly crisp, with no cropping issues or image distortions.

Is there a way to resize your images before uploading them to Instagram?
In a world where quality photography is expected and necessary to grow your audience you can make use of easily available software such as Adobe Photoshop to resize your images to meet the criteria of Instagram before you upload them. This will give you the best final result on the feeds of your Instagram followers.
Value of Instagram cannot be underestimated for Photographers and other Creatives.
Instagram is a great platform that specializes in images, unlike Facebook for instance, which means that the people on the site are there to see pictures! Each day over 200 million people check out a least one of the people they follow and with over 1 billion active users the site looks set to grow steadily long into the future.
As well as helping you reach a larger audience Instagram has some great filters that you can quickly and easily apply to your images on the platform. These are actually quite good quality and although they don’t compete with dedicated post production software they are fun and you can still modify factors such as brightness, sharpness and contrast.
Gaining a good loyal following on Instagram will really boost your confidence and give you a great way to see which of your work people are responding the best to. This can be a very helpful way for photographers, both professional and hobbyist, to analyze what is working and what is not by leveraging the wisdom of the crowd! This kind of feedback is an invaluable teaching tool and will help you develop your photography and working knowledge of building a successful relationship with your audience.
