We’ve all heard the saying that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ and although all visual artists and photographers know deep down that it’s true, why exactly is that?
Photography can stand alone and make a powerful impression on an audience, overcoming language barriers and can even speak to people across time and space, through decades and across continents! So, when you incorporate photography with your writing you can really create a strong multifaceted story, article or photoblog that projects a message more powerful than only words could express. Photography or graphics should be part of thesis or essays.
There are many benefits of using images and photographs with your writing but they also need to be well placed and meaningful within the context of the piece.
- Positioning pictures correctly within your text creates natural pauses, allowing the reader to gather their thoughts and take in what you’ve said so far. Breaking up the text also makes it easier for your audience to read and absorb your message and improves their experience of your photo blog, article or text.
- A well positioned photograph, within the text, will also link the parts of your text together in a meaningful way. The photograph will illuminate what you’ve said so far and carry the reader onto what comes next.
- The human mind has an extremely visual memory so using photographs interspersed within the text helps your readers to remember, even subconsciously, what you’ve said and will allow them to form stronger bonds with your content.
Choosing the Right Photograph is as Important as Using Photographs in your Writing.
The right photograph to some extent depends on the camera that you are using. You can take very good photos using a Samsung or Apple phone. The featured image that you see on this page was taken using a Samsung phone. But investing in a good camera is worthwhile if you in it for the long term. I have a Canon camera that is almost 15 years old and it still works fine.
One of my favorite cameras is the Panasonic Lumix GH5. It first came out in 2017 and is still one of the best in its class. It currently sells for about $800 less that what it did back in 2017. I have a few budget cameras as well and I will be posting an article in the near future about the cameras that I like in the different price brackets.
Not only should you definitely be using photography within your text but you need to think carefully about what you choose to use. Avoid stock photography and try to create your own images whenever possible.
Using bright and vibrant colors will help to make the page look attractive and allow the images to stand out from the text. Always use the highest resolution that you can so that the photographs can be appreciated to their full and make sure that you size them appropriately.
When you do include photographs consider adding a caption if it’s going to help to give it context within your writing.
5 Reasons why Photographs are Important to use with Writing.
- Photography has emotional power that can move your audience. Photography crosses all language barriers and speaks to us all. Photography is a highly complex set of ideas that bypasses the conscious mind and leaves a deep impression on your readers. By creating an emotional bond with your readers you will be helping to form a lasting and loyal following for your work.
- Photography can give your writing context in a way that words can never do. Using the right photograph at the right time can really help you to convey your message better. Photography is a highly effective explanatory tool when used in the right way throughout your writing so always try to include them in all of your work. Photography can really help people to visualize what you’re saying and the mood in which you are saying it.
- Using photographs within your text makes the page look more appealing, even before your audience begins to read it. If your reader arrives on your site and they are just presented with a huge wall of text they are more than likely to click away immediately! However, if they arrive and see text and beautiful photography, the images will help to make them curious and they’ll start reading!
- Photography, and other images, can be a helpful way of increasing traffic to your website. In order to do this you will need to optimize the ‘tags’ for the photographs, use captions and name their files appropriately. This is called Search Engine Optimization and although it can seem daunting at first once you have figured it out there’s really nothing to it!
- Articles, blogs and other text pieces that have more photographs tend to get shared more often on social media and other platforms which will increase your reach and help to grow your audience over time. This is especially true if you use highly appropriate photographs that really add to what you have written.
Photographs are an invaluable tool in writing.
As a photographer you will be able to add a huge amount of value to your writing by including great images that capture the imagination of your audience while succinctly conveying your message more powerfully. However, you don’t need to stop there. When it’s appropriate don’t hold back from using embedded videos, diagrams and other artwork within your writing to really create a special page bursting with interest and new perspectives!
Always spend time reviewing your writing and the photographs you have included to ensure that it’s conveying the message and the meaning that you want them to.
Over time the kind of photography that you use will come to represent your personal ‘brand’ and fans of your work will instantly be able to recognize that it’s yours. This builds up a good relationship with your audience and as they come to see the world through your eyes they will become loyal followers of your projects.
